Brilliant, said Hermione. This isn't magic - it's logic.

Puzzle Sixteen - Movie Magic - Solution Page

Five Gryffindor sixth year boys (Corvis, Danil, Edmund, Frank, and Gerald) were interested in seeing the first installment of the life story of one of Gryffindor's greatest wizards finally portrayed on the Muggle big screen.

None of the boys came from pure Muggle families, and so they were all a bit confused about how to hide themselves from the crowds of Muggles. Two of them decided to use magic to conceal themselves (one using an invisibility cloak and the other using a Unnoticeable Charm). The other three decided to use disguises of Muggle clothing - one disguised himself by wearing a full tuxedo, another by dressing up as a university student, and the third by putting on red muggle clothing that looked suspiciously like the uniform of the Liverpool Football Club.

All five of them made their way to a movie theatre in London - and since the movie was so highly anticipated in the Muggle world, it was showing on five screens simultaneously. The five Gryffindors decided to split up so as to attract less attention than they had on their trip on the tube. Each would see the movie on a different screen.

The five screening rooms were arranged left to right like this:

1 2 3 4 5

Can you figure out which Gryffindor boy used which method of disguise or concealment, and in which screening room each saw the film?
  1. The five Gryffindors are Edmund, the one who dressed as a university student, the one who saw the movie in Room 2, and the two who used magic to hide themselves.

  2. Gerald's movie room was somewhere to the left of Corvis'; one of them was in Room 4.

  3. The student who used the invisibility cloak and the student who disguised himself as a university student were in Rooms 3 and 5, in some order.

  4. Danil's movie room was not to the immediate right of the student who wore the tuxedo.

  5. The three students who disguised themselves using Muggle clothing did not attend the movie in rooms that were all right next to each other.

  6. The student who disguised himself with the Liverpool FC uniform and Frank were in rooms next to each other, in one order or another - Frank, however, was not in Room 2.

Solution:

The student who saw the movie in Room 4 isn't Edmund (because clue 2 says it either has to be Gerald or Corvis), and couldn't have been either the one who disguised himself as a university student or the one who wore the Invisibility cloak (because clue 3 says those two were in Rooms 3 and 5). So out of the five Gryffindors mentioned in clue 1, the student who saw the movie in Room 4 had to have been using the Unnoticeable Charm (in other words, the second of the two students who used magic to hide himself).

Since the student who used the Unnoticeable Charm was in Room 4, the student who used the Invisibility Cloak coudln't have been in Room 5, since that would put the three students who used Muggle disguises in Rooms 1, 2, and 3. That would put them in rooms all right next to each other, but clue 5 says they weren't.

So that means that the student who used the Invisibility Cloak must have been in Room 3, and thus the student who disguised himself as a university student was in Room 5.

The students who wore the Liverpool FC uniform and the tuxedo must then be in Rooms 1 and 2. The student who wore the Liverpool FC uniform couldn't have been in Room 1, however, because he's right next to Frank and that would put Frank in Room 2, which he can't have been in (clue 6). So this means that the student wearing the Liverpool FC uniform was in Room 2, and the student wearing the tuxedo was in Room 1.

Of the five students mentioned in clue 1, we can account for four of the rooms - one of them was in Room 2, the boy disguised as a university student was in Room 5, and the two using magical means of hiding were in Rooms 3 and 4. This leaves only Edmund, who by elimination must have been in Room 1 (and thus wearing the tuxedo).

One of the students next to the boy wearing the Liverpool FC uniform (in Room 2) must have been Frank. Frank can't have been in Room 1, since we just figured out that was Edmund. So Frank must be in Room 3 (and must have been the one who used the Invisibility Cloak).

Danil was not to the immediate right of the student who wore the tuxedo (Edmund, in Room 1), and thus couldn't have been in Room 2. Room 2, then, must have been occupied by either Gerald or Corvis. Since Gerald's room has to be to the left of Corvis' (clue 2), Gerald has to be the one in Room 2 (and is the one wearing the Liverpool FC uniform).

If Gerald is the one in Room 2, then Corvis was in Room 4 (because clue 2 says one of those two had to be in Room 4) - and thus Corvis was the one who used the Unnoticeable Charm. By process of elimination, then, Danil had to have been the one in Room 5, disguised as a university student.

To sum up:

1

Edmund

tuxedo

2

Gerald

Liverpool FC
uniform
3

Frank

invisibility
cloak
4

Corvis

Unnoticeable
Charm
5

Danil

university
student
