Puzzle Nine - Mugwump Meetings - Solution Page
The schedule for the meetings of the Supreme Mugwumps of the International Conferderation of Wizards has just been set. Their annual meeting will be held in a different city each year (Ankara, Buenos Aires, Calcutta, Dar-es-Salaam, and Zurich), and will be chaired by a Supreme Mugwumps (Kournifov, Minkyl, Ordlock, Vitupera, and Wingard).
When Dumbledore chaired last year's meeting in Osaka, the other Mugwumps were amused at his fondness for Muggle candy. But just like Dumbledore, each of the five Mugwumps who will chair the future meetings has a quirk or unusual habit. One, for example, will go nowhere without his parrot (who likes to belt out show tunes). Another Mugwump wears only bright magenta robes. A third breeds champion Crups. Yet another Mugwump has a permanent case of the hiccups (the unfortunate result of a misapplied Cheering Charm). And the last out of the five prefers to attend meetings floating on a flying carpet. Can you match each of the five Mugwumps with the city in which he or she will chair the meeting, and his or her quirk (show-tune parrot, magenta robes, Crup breeder, hiccups, or flying carpet)?
Solution: Kornikov will be having a secret conference with the Mugwump who'll be chairing the Buenos Aires meeting, a conference to which Ordlock, the chair of the Ankara meeting, and the Mugwump with hiccups are not invited (clue 1). So all five of these must be different Mugwumps. The chair of the Buenos Aires meeting must know about the secret conference, and thus cannot be Minkyl or Vitupera (clue 2). Thus Windgard must be chairing the Buenos Aires meeting. Windgard does not have the permanent hiccups, as the Mugwump with the hiccups isn't a part of the secret conference (clue 1). Windgard isn't the one who dresses in magenta robes (clue 4), and since he is the chair of the Buenos Aires meeting he also cannot be the Mugwump with the strange parrot nor the Crup-breeder. Thus, Windgard must be the Mugwump who attends on a flying carpet. Ordlock also cannot be the Mugwump with hiccups (clue 1), and Ordlock doesn't own a singing parrot and he doesn't breed Crups (clue 7), so Ordlock is the Mugwump who wears magenta robes. From clue 1 we know Ordlock cannot be chairing either the Buenos Aires or the Ankara meeting. Ordlock furthermore cannot be chairing the Zurich meeting because that will be chaired by either Minkyl or Vitupera. He cannot be chairing the Calcutta meeting because we know he wears the magenta robes and the Mugwump who wears magenta robes is not charing the Calcutta meeting (clue 6). So Ordlock is chairing the meeting in Dar-es-Salaam. Kournikov is not chairing the Ankara meeing (clue 1) nor the Zurich meeting (clue 2), Windgard is chairing the Buenos Aires meeting, and Ordlock is chairing the Dar-es-Salaam meeting. Thus the only meeting left for Kournikov to chair is the Calcutta meeting. Kournikov is not the Mugwump with the hiccups (clue 1). If Kournikov chairs the Calcutta meeting, he does not breed Crups (clue 6). Ordlock wears magenta robes and Windard uses the flying carpet, so the only quirk left for Kournikov is to be the owner of the show tune parrot. The Mugwump who chairs the Ankara meeting cannot have the permanent hiccups (clue 1). The chair of the Buenos Aires meeting (Windgard) has the flying carpet, the chair of the Calcutta meeting (Kournikov) has the parrot, the chair of the Dar-es-Salaam meeting (Ordlock) wears magenta robes. So the chair of the Ankara meeting must be the one who breeds Crups. By elimination, then, the Mugwump who chairs the Zurich meeting is the one with the permanent hiccups. Since the chair of the Ankara meeting breeds Crups, it cannot be Vitupera (clue 3), so it must be Minkyl, and by elimination Vitupera chairs the Zurich meeting. To sum up:
