Ravenclaw Tests of Logic

Brilliant, said Hermione. This isn't magic - it's logic.

Puzzle Eight - The Guardians - Solution Page

The Ministry of Magic employs specially-trained wizards called Guardians who are ready to respond quickly whenever a magical creature threatens the well-being of a human - whether wizard or Muggle.

On the first Hogsmeade weekend of the year, four Hogwarts students (Brian, Cassidy, Munir, and Wendy) were lucky enough to run into a group of Guardians who'd stopped by the Three Broomsticks. Each of the four Hogwarts students had a conversation with a different Guardian (whose names were Calindra, Destrius, Roake, and Shedra, in no particular order). Each Guardian, as it turns out, began his or her career in a different year (1992, 1993, 1994, or 1995) and specializes in a different dangerous magical creature (Lethifold, Dragon, Kelpie, or Acromantula).

Can you match each of the Guardians to the year his or her career began, to his or her specialty creature, and to the Hogwarts student with whom he or she conversed?

  1. The four Guardians are Shedra, the one who talked to Brian, the one who specializes in Dragons, and the one whose career began in 1994.

  2. Destrius joined the Guardians in 1993.

  3. The Guardian who specializes in Kelpies did not join the organization the year before the Guardian who talked to Wendy.

  4. The Guardian with the Lethifold specialty joined the organization the year after Calindra did, and the year before the one who had a conversation with Munir.

  5. Roake doesn't specialize in acromantulae.

Solution:

Calindra joined the year before the person with the Lethifold specialty, who joined the year before the person who talked to Munir (clue 4). These three must thus either be 1992, 1993, 1994 or 1993, 1994, 1995. But Destrius became a Guardian in 1993 (clue 2), so Calindra couldn't have joined then and thus Calindra joined in 1992 and Destrius is the one who has the Lethifold specialty.

Shedra didn't join in 1994 (clue 1), and so the only one left for 1994 is Roake, leaving 1995 as the only possibility for Shedra. Since Roake joined in 1994, he's the one who talked to Munir.

Of the four possibilities in clue 1, we know Shedra cannot be the one who talked to Brian nor the one who specializes in Dragons. We also know Roake cannot be either of those two, because he's the one who became a Guardian in 1994. So Calindra and Destrius must be those two. Since Destrius has the Lethifold specialty, Calindra must be the one with the Dragon specialty, and thus Destrius is the one who talked to Brian.

Since Dragons and Lethifolds are the specialties of Calindra and Destrius, Kelpie and Acromantulae must be the specialties of Roake and Shedra, in one order or another. But Roake doesn't specialize in Acromantulae, so that's Shedra's specialty and Roake is the Kelpie specialist.

Since Roake is the Kelpie expert and joined in 1994, the person who joined in 1995 (Shedra) cannot have been the one to talk to Wendy (clue 3). Roake talked to Munir, and Destrius talked to Brian, so that leaves Calindra as the only one who could have talked to Wendy, and by elimination, Shedra talked to Cassidy.

To sum up:

Guardian Student Talked to Specialty Year of Career Start
Calindra Wendy Dragons 1992
Destrius Brian Lethifolds 1993
Roake Munir Kelpies 1994
Shedra Cassidy Acromantulae 1995
