Puzzle Two - Tuesday Classes - Solution Page
On Tuesdays, four Ravenclaw students (Abby, Bartlett, Cynthia, and Darien) are all taking the same four classes (Divination, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration, in no particular order). One class is at 10:00, another at 11:00, another at 3:00, and the last at 4:00. In each class, one and only one of the four students won 10 points for Ravenclaw - a different student in each class. Can you match which student won points in which class, along with the order of classes for the day?
1. The four classes (in random order) are Transfiguration, the one in which Darien earned 10 points, the 10:00 class, and Herbology.
2. Abby won ten points in either the 11:00 or the 3:00 class.
3. During Divination, Bartlett wasn't paying attention and won no points, as he was finishing his homework for the next class. But in that next class, he won 10 points for Ravenclaw.
4. During Herbology, Darien got an owl from Professor Laffengraff, telling him he had to go to a meeting at 4:00 (which meant he missed his 4:00 class).
Solution:
The student who won points in the 10:00 class is not Darien (clue 1), Abby (clue 2), or Bartlett (clue 3). (It couldn't have been Bartlett because he couldn't have won points in his first class). So the student who won points in the 10:00 class must have been Cynthia.
The student who won points in the 4:00 class is not Abby (clue 2), nor Darien (clue 4), and we've already determined Cynthia won them at 10:00. So the student who won points in the 4:00 class must have been Bartlett.
Since Bartlett won points in the 4:00 class, and was finishing his homework for that class in Divination just beforehand (clue 3), Divination must be the 3:00 class.
The 10:00 class is not Transfiguration (clue 1) or Herbology (clue 1), and we've just figured out that Divination is the 3:00 class, so the 10:00 class must be Potions.
Herbology can't have been the 4:00 class (clue 4), and since Potions was at 10:00 and Divination was at 3:00, Herbology must have been at 11:00.
This means the 4:00 class is the only class left over, Transfiguration.
Darien didn't win points in the 10:00 class, because that was Cynthia. The 11:00 class was Herbology, and we know that's not the one Darien won points in (clue 1). The 4:00 class Darien did not attend (clue 4). So Darien won points in the 3:00 class - Divination.
Since we know who won points in the 10:00 class (Cynthia), the 3:00 class (Darien), and the 4:00 class (Bartlett), the remaining class is the 11:00 class, which is when Abby won her points.
