Ravenclaw Tests of Logic

Brilliant, said Hermione. This isn't magic - it's logic.

News and Site Updates from November, 2001:

Thursday, 29 November 2001, 18:48 EST

Hagrid's been acquiring some more "interestin' creatures" - and after an incident in which a Hufflepuff second-year was nearly devoured, Dumbledore inquired as to whether Hagrid might build them some pens. Find out how Hagrid arranged his pens - and what happened when there weren't enough pens for every creature - in this week's puzzle, L.O.M.C. (Lair of Magical Creatures).

Or, if you prefer, here is a black-and-white printable version of F.O.M.C..

As always, the first five people to solve a puzzle will appear in the Hall of Fame. The list of all who correctly solved the puzzle, and the solution, will be posted next Wednesday, December 5, 2001.

Whoops! Sorry about falling off the face of the Earth for a week. Real life, plus some Thanksgiving madness took me out of the action last week. But I'm back again, with the winners of the puzzle from two weeks ago - Puzzle Sixteen - Movie Magic.

Just like Puzzle Fifteen, the winners for Puzzle Sixteen came overwhelmingly from Hufflepuff House - congrats to the superb Hufflepuff puzzlers! Their streak was broken only by Pyrus Japonica of Gryffindor, who was the very first to solve the puzzle. Pyrus takes home this week's gold medal, while the silver and bronze medals were won by Mercury "Mark" McKinnon and Shadow Diggory of Hufflepuff, respectively. The rest of this week's winners, as always, can be found in the Hall of Fame.

Here is the correct solution to Movie Magic. The puzzle was correctly solved by:

Pyrus Japonica, Mercury "Mark" McKinnon, Shadow Diggory, Bronwyn Pendragon, Lucy Liu, Eduya Shsao, Claire Silverthorne, Fake Moody, Ody Zeus, Dara Ware, Emma Bott, Irix Nuit, Katie McAnders, Guppie Ewing, Rhiannon Llewellyn, Evylyn Desirée, Hillary Weasley, Ororo Granger, Rogue Granger, Mabel Diggory, Acinonyx Jubatus, and Sir De'ath de Si&.
The next puzzle will be posted tomorrow night - Thursday, November 29, 2001.

Would there, by chance, be an upcoming movie that you're interested in seeing? If so, you're no different than five Gryffindor sixth-year students. They, of course, were interested in going to see the movie version of the life story of one of Gryffindor's greatest wizards. But unlike you, they had some trouble figuring out just how to go about doing it. Learn about their experience going to a Muggle movie theater in this week's puzzle, Movie Magic.

Or, if you prefer, here is a black-and-white printable version of Movie Magic.

As always, the first five people to solve a puzzle will appear in the Hall of Fame. The list of all who correctly solved the puzzle, and the solution, will be posted next Wednesday, November 21, 2001. Since next Thursday is also Thanksgiving Day in the United States, I'll probably be posting next week's puzzle on Wednesday as well.

Before I announce this week's winners, I'd like to make two announcements. First, I'd like to wish a very happy birthday to Professor Willow Laffengraf, the Ravenclaw Head of House. Since this is a Ravenclaw site (though open to all), I thought it was appropriate to extend birthday wishes.

Secondly, I've received an e-mail from someone who's not a HOL student but who'd still like to work on the puzzles. I don't know how many other people are out there who might also be wondering if it's okay for them to participate even though they don't have a HOL ID. The answer is "YES! Please participate!" - I'd love to have other people solving the puzzles. When it comes time to submit, just put "Not applicable" or something like that in the HOL ID box - it'll still send it. I think I'll restrict the Hall of Fame to HOL students, but anyone who correctly solves the puzzle will get their name listed here and on the puzzle pages, HOL student or not.

And now, on to this week's winners! First of all, Puzzle Fifteen, Food Fight, was probably the hardest puzzle I've yet put on the site. The Hall of Fame for this puzzle was very nearly a Hufflepuff sweep - congrats to Shadow Diggory, Mercury "Mark" McKinnon, Mabel Diggory, and Evylyn Desirée who solved this very hard puzzle and did Hufflepuff House proud. Shadow, Mark, and Mabel take home the gold, silver, and bronze medals. And thanks also to Fake Moody, who saved Ravenclaw's honor with the fifth spot in the Hall of Fame - and to Pyrus Japonica of Gryffindor and Irix Nuit of Slytherin who didn't make the Hall of Fame but who proved that skill in logic extends to all four houses.

As for Puzzle Fourteen, Quid Pro Grads, congratulations are due to Claire Silverthorne of Ravenclaw, who was the first to correctly solve the puzzle. The second through fifth place winners, as always, can be found in the Hall of Fame.

Here is the correct solution to Quid Pro Grads. The puzzle was correctly solved by:

Claire Silverthorne, Mercury "Mark" McKinnon, Kimaire Seloiro, Bronwyn Pendragon, Dara Ware, Shaddow Diggory, Chichiri Weasley, Ody Zeus, Rhiannon Llewellyn, Merlinda Gandore, Daisy Treefrog, Heather Kinney, Niche Eenhoorn, Tanya Kirk, Emma Bott, Guppie Ewing, Fake Moody, Pyrus Japonica, Rogue Granger, Ororo Granger, Lucy Liu, Stephanie Roof, George Gidley, Kara Grainger, Kat Shields, Kelsey Brenan, Jenn Block, Julie Spinnet, Irix Nuit, and Lynn Law.
Here is the correct solution to Food Fight - the hardest puzzle yet! The puzzle was correctly solved by:

Shadow Diggory, Mercury "Mark" McKinnon, Mabel Diggory, Evylyn Desirée, Fake Moody, Kara Grainger, Katie McAnders, Pyrus Japonica, and Irix Nuit.
The next puzzle will be posted tomorrow night - Thursday, November 15, 2001.

Sorry I didn't update this page last night - I just got back from my trip and I had a hard time retrieving my saved e-mails with all of the puzzle submissions. But not to worry! I did get them, which means I could update the site and ask you to congratulate Mabel Diggory of Hufflepuff, who was the first to solve puzzle twelve, Founding Statues, and Heather Kinney of Gryffindor, who was the first to solve the (very difficult) puzzle thirteen, Fun With Visitors. The second through fifth place winners can be found in the Hall of Fame.

Here is the correct solution to Founding Statues. The puzzle was correctly solved by:

Mabel Diggory, Pyrus Japonica, Rhiannon Llewellyn, Fake Moody, Jenn Block, Dea Aurumlupi, Erik Rowling, Heather Kinney, Ron Thompson, Kimaire Seloiro, Ody Zeus, George Gidley, Emma Bott, Mercury "Mark" McKinnon, Niche Eenhoorn, Irix Nuit, Evylyn Desirée, Jessie Barren, Dara Ware, Professor Asclepius Argumentus, Lynn Law, Claire Silverthorne, Daisy Treefrog, Louise McGonagall, Cody Winters, Venefica vom Lehn, Chichiri Weasly, and Hilary Weasley.
Here is the correct solution to Fun With Visitors - a very hard puzzle! The puzzle was correctly solved by:

Heather Kinney, George Gidley, Pyrus Japonica, Emma Bott, Mabel Diggory, Mercury "Mark" McKinnon, Irix Nuit, Evylyn Desirée, Dara Ware, Louise McGonagall, Lynn Law, Stephanie Roof, Venefica vom Lehn, Shadow Diggory, and Chichiri Weasly.
And now, for this week's puzzles!

For some reason, I just seem to have Quidditch on the brain this week. And so, we have a couple of Quidditch-themed puzzles for your enjoyment.

The first puzzle, Quid Pro Grads, follows some Beauxbatons Quidditch stars after they leave that fine school and try out for their national teams.

The second puzzle, just like last week, is a lot harder harder. It would seem that tensions before the Ravenclaw / Slytherin Quidditch match got a little out of hand, and Professor Stirringstone had to step in to set things right. Find out what happened in this week's second puzzle, Food Fight.

Or, if you prefer, here are the black-and-white printable versions:

Easy Puzzle: Quid Pro Grads printable version
Hard Puzzle: Food Fight printable version

As always, the first five people to solve a puzzle will appear in the Hall of Fame. The list of all who correctly solved the puzzles, and the solution, will be posted next Wednesday, November 14, 2001.

In honor of November, which is by far the greatest month of the year, tonight we have not one but two puzzles for your enjoyment! Why is November the greatest month, do you ask? Well, naturally because it is my own birthday month! Rather than tell you, I'll be content to let you guess my age - no clues allowed.

Our first puzzle, Founding Statues, concerns a set of statues outside one the Great Wizarding Library in London - the four statues, I trust, will be familiar to you.

The second puzzle is considerably harder - perhaps the hardest puzzle yet on this site. Some playful Hogwarts students, you see, are trying to confuse a poor befuddled visitor from the Ministry of Magic. Perhaps you can do better than the poor Ministry official in this week's second puzzle, Fun With Visitors.

Or, if you prefer, here are the black-and-white printable versions:

Easy Puzzle: Founding Statues printable version
Hard Puzzle: Fun With Visitors printable version

As always, the first five people to solve a puzzle will appear in the Hall of Fame. The list of all who correctly solved the puzzles, and the solution, will be posted next Wednesday, November 7, 2001.
